Glossary
The following terms, organised alphabetically, are used within the cards industry. Here you will find simple explanations to help you navigate the jargon and specialist terminology.
| Debit |
A charge to or withdrawal from a customer's account. Transactions, such as payment by cheque, cash machine withdrawals or credit card purchases in a shop, will debit money from an account. |
| Debit card |
A payment card linked to a bank or a building society account, used to pay for goods and services by debiting the holder's account. It usually comes with other facilities such as cash machine and cheque guarantee functions. |
| Debt |
An amount of money borrowed and owed by one party to another. |
| Delta |
An electronic debit card payment scheme offered by Visa. |
| Diners Club |
An international card scheme. |
| Discharged |
When a bankrupt person is legally free of any obligation to repay certain debts. |
| Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) |
In the UK, the Dynamic Currency Conversion service will provide overseas cardholders with the option to be charged in their own currency at the point-of-sale using the latest current exchange rates or to pay in sterling. |
