Contactless Statistics

The key figures for March 2017 are:

  • There are a total of 107.4m contactless cards in issue in the UK. These cards are split between debit (72.3m) and credit / charge cards (35.2m). This is an increase of 1.5% on the previous month and 21.7% over the year.
  • £4,009.2m was spent in the UK in the month using a contactless card. This is an increase of 19.9% on the previous month and an increase of 165.8% on the previous year. The value is split between debit (£3,500.0m) and credit / charge cards (£509.2m).
  • 442.5m contactless transactions were made in the month. This is an increase of 19.9% on the previous month and 146.3% over the year. The volume is split between debit (388.2m) and credit / charge cards (54.2m).
  • 484,671 bank-owned terminals are available in the UK where contactless cardholders can make a contactless transaction. This is an increase of 1.3% on the previous month and 36.6% over the year.
  • The average contactless transaction was for £9.06. This is split by £9.01 on a debit card and £9.39 on a credit / charge card.
