Contactless Statistics

The key figures for the month of September 2016 are:

  • There are a total of 98.9m contactless cards in issue in the UK. These cards are split between debit (67.7m) and credit / charge cards (31.2m). This is an increase of 1.9% on the previous month and 29.7% over the year.
  • £2,423.4m was spent in the UK in the month using a contactless card. This is an increase of 3.6% on the previous month and an increase of 219.5% per the year. The value is split between debit (£2,130.7m) and credit / charge cards (£292.7m).
  • 275.1m contactless transactions were made in the month. This is an increase of 5.5% on the previous month and 166.7% over the year. The volume is split between debit (242.2m) and credit / charge cards (33.0m).
  • 419,431 bank-owned terminals are available in the UK where contactless cardholders can make a contactless transaction. This is an increase of 4.8% on the previous month and 45.5% over the year.
  • The average contactless transaction was for £8.81. This is split by £8.80 on a debit card and £8.87 on a credit / charge card.
