Contactless Statistics

The key figures for January 2017 are:

  • There are a total of 104.4m contactless cards in issue in the UK. These cards are split between debit (71.0m) and credit / charge cards (33.4m). This is an increase of 1.7% on the previous month and 25.0% over the year.
  • £3,186.2m was spent in the UK in the month using a contactless card. This is a decrease of 5.5% on the previous month and an increase of 187.8% on the previous year. The value is split between debit (£2,797.2m) and credit / charge cards (£389.1m).
  • 351.1m contactless transactions were made in the month. This is a decrease of -0.8% on the previous month and 158.6% over the year. The volume is split between debit (308.8m) and credit / charge cards (42.3m).
  • The average contactless transaction was for £9.08. This is split by £9.06 on a debit card and £9.20 on a credit / charge card.
