Contactless Statistics

The key figures for December 2016 are:

  • There are a total of 102.7m contactless cards in issue in the UK. These cards are split between debit (70.1m) and credit / charge cards (32.6m). This is an increase of 0.8% on the previous month and 25.8% over the year.
  • £3,370.6m was spent in the UK in the month using a contactless card. This is an increase of 16.1% on the previous month and an increase of 180.7% on the previous year. The value is split between debit (£2,964.8m) and credit / charge cards (£405.7m).
  • 353.9m contactless transactions were made in the month. This is an increase of 9.1% on the previous month and 152.5% over the year. The volume is split between debit (312.5m) and credit / charge cards (41.5m).
  • 450,554 bank-owned terminals are available in the UK where contactless cardholders can make a contactless transaction. This is an increase of 2.5% on the previous month and 45.5% over the year.
  • The average contactless transaction was for £9.52. This is split by £9.49 on a debit card and £9.78 on a credit / charge card.
