Contactless Statistics

The key figures for the month of April (2016) are:

  • As of April 2016, there are a total of 88.1 m contactless cards in issue in the UK. These cards are split between debit (61.8m) and credit / charge cards (26.3m). This is an increase of 1.9% on the previous month and 34.5% over the year.
  • £1,580.3m was spent in the UK in the month using a contactless card. This is an increase of 4.8% on the previous month and an increase of 247.7% over the year. The value is split between debit (£1,386.6m) and credit / charge cards (£193.7m).
  • 187.7m contactless transactions were made in the month. This is an increase of 4.5% on the previous month and 185.9% over the year. The volume is split between debit (164.5m) and credit / charge cards (23.2m).
  • 367,771 bank-owned terminals are available in the UK where contactless cardholders can make a contactless transaction. This is an increase of 3.6% on the previous month and 54.4% over the year.
  • On average, each contactless transaction is for £8.42. This is split £8.43 on a debit card and £8.36 on a credit / charge card.
