Contactless Statistics

The key figures for April 2017 are:

  • There are a total of 108.4m contactless cards in issue in the UK. These cards are split between debit (72.6m) and credit / charge cards (35.8m). This is an increase of 0.9% on the previous month and 20.6% over the year.
  • £3,913.3m was spent in the UK in the month using a contactless card. This is a decrease of 2.4% on the previous month and an increase of 147.6% on the previous year. The value is split between debit (£3,412.5m) and credit / charge cards (£500.9m).
  • 416.3m contactless transactions were made in the month. This is a decrease of 5.9% on the previous month and an increase of 121.9% over the year. The volume is split between debit (364.6m) and credit / charge cards (51.8m).
  • 491,084 bank-owned terminals are available in the UK where contactless cardholders can make a contactless transaction. This is an increase of 1.3% on the previous month and 33.5% over the year.
  • The average contactless transaction was for £9.40. This is split by £9.36 on a debit card and £9.68 on a credit / charge card.
