Contactless Statistics

The key figures for the month of June (2016) are:

  • As of June 2016, there are a total of 92.1 m contactless cards in issue in the UK. These cards are split between debit (65.1m) and credit / charge cards (27.0m). This is an increase of 2.5% on the previous month and 33.5% over the year.
  • £1,882.8m was spent in the UK in the month using a contactless card. This is an increase of 0.5% on the previous month and an increase of 232.0% over the year. The value is split between debit (£1,648.3m) and credit / charge cards (£234.5m).
  • 218.9m contactless transactions were made in the month. This is an increase of 0.4% on the previous month and 169.4% over the year. The volume is split between debit (191.6m) and credit / charge cards (27.2m).
  • 393,032 bank-owned terminals are available in the UK where contactless cardholders can make a contactless transaction. This is an increase of 3.4% on the previous month and 51.7% over the year.
  • On average, each contactless transaction is for £8.60. This is split £8.60 on a debit card and £8.61 on a credit / charge card.
