Contactless Statistics

The key figures for the month of March (2016) are:

  • As of March 2016, there are a total of 86.5 m contactless cards in issue in the UK. These cards are split between debit (60.9m) and credit / charge cards (25.6m). This is an increase of 2.7% on the previous month and 35.6% over the year.
  • £1,508.4m was spent in the UK in the month using a contactless card. This is an increase of 14.4% on the previous month and an increase of 249.9% over the year. The value is split between debit (£1,326.5m) and credit / charge cards (£181.9m).
  • 179.6m contactless transactions were made in the month. This is an increase of 12.9% on the previous month and 184.0% over the year. The volume is split between debit (157.8m) and credit / charge cards (21.8m).
  • 354,825 bank-owned terminals are available in the UK where contactless cardholders can make a contactless transaction. This is an increase of 6.7% on the previous month and 54.9% over the year.
  • On average, each contactless transaction is for £8.40. This is split £8.40 on a debit card and £8.34 on a credit / charge card.
