Fundamental to our future fraud prevention
strategy, we have developed a comprehensive
industry level threat management process and
are working closely with a wide range of
stakeholders including law enforcement to
target prevention activity.
Stakeholder Relations and Research
Underpinning all this work has been a
programme of stakeholder engagement where
I and The UK Cards Association team have been
spreading the industry’s messages with Ministers,
MPs, civil servants, the debt advice agencies
and consumer groups amongst others, in the
UK and Europe, in an open and co-operative
manner whilst also giving attention to concerns.
We continue to commission up-to-date research
to give our arguments credibility, with the
Association being the authoritative voice on
how and why our customers behave as they
do and what they want from the industry. We
also seek to provide thought leadership and
innovation – for example, exploring with
respected academics the prospects for a
complement to the APR to help consumers
better understand the true costs of using their
credit cards and to be more equipped to
compare products, an issue thrown into focus
by the rate capping debate.
The Association has also played its role in
dealing with super-complaints, whether directly
about our members or not, such as Consumer
Focus on foreign currency charges, again
adopting a rigorous evidence-based approach.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank
not just the staff of the Association but also its
members who devote their time and expertise
to the benefit of the wider industry. The
achievements of the past couple of years
would not have been possible without this
commitment. I am encouraged and energised
by the recent progress that we have made and
look forward to shaping our agenda into 2012
and beyond – a future that benefits our
members, the industry’s many customers,
and society at large.
